I am writing this letter to express my support for 8 Washington and its significant improvements to our waterfront. The project reflects 7+ years of community input and planning that will provide for better use of urban land that currently consists of a PRIVATE recreation club, two surface parking lots and a 3-block long chain link fence. San Francisco Waterfront Partners listened to the community and redesigned the project to reflect community input. The mixed-use project would provide numerous benefits to the City, its residents and visitors. 8 Washington provides the following important benefits: - Approximately 134 units of housing close to downtown and along one of the City's busiest transit corridors, adding to the neighborhood's security and vitality. In a green city like ours, this is EXACTLY where housing should be built! - A total of approximately 30,000 square feet of new public open space and parks, including a much-needed children's play area and sculptural garden (paid for and maintained in perpetuity at no cost to the City). - Opening of Jackson and Pacific Streets to the Embarcadero - providing public access and visual corridors between Jackson Square, North Beach and Chinatown to the waterfront. - Widening of Drumm Street Garden Walk, connecting all of the public open spaces - Approximately 20,000 square feet of indoor/outdoor restaurants and retail - bringing more people and activity the west side of the Embarcadero. Animating the streets and sidewalks. - Widened sidewalks, averaging 15 feet. - Removal of curb cuts along the Embarcadero. - 255 public, underground parking spaces serving the Ferry Building area. - 161 bike parking spaces. - 6 car share spaces. - Renovated and expanded state-of-the-art fitness and aquatics club with green roof, green walls along Embarcadero. - $9M in affordable housing fees - Millions of dollars in property taxes paid to the City by the owners of the 134 new condominiums - Ongoing revenue to the Port to support its infrastructure projects. - Hundreds of construction jobs and on-site permanent jobs. This project deserves your support. It exemplifies the type of infill development that our City needs. Thank you for your consideration.
